Gelato Cafes Are a Family PassionWe wish to serve you the most delicious gelato, coffee and desserts. Living upstairs from your own gelato cafe, sounds like an Italian dessert lover’s dream, but it’s a reality for Brian Ugurlu, who opened and manages Sirena Gelato on Harris Ave. in Fairhaven. His sister Melissa helps as well. “I can’t think of a place more fun than one that serves gelato and desserts,” said Brian. “No one goes into a gelato cafe in a bad mood, and Fairhaven is the perfect place to put it.” The first cafe opened in the Harris Square building in Fairhaven at 960 Harris Avenue. In 2006 the Barkley Village Sirena Gelato opened and is now quite a success. Brian is the son of Fahri and Robin Ugurlu, owners of The Harborside Bistro. Restaurants run in the family. Brian spent a summer in Italy and came back knowing what he wanted to do.

The family was trained together by Leonardo Mazzero (a third generation gelato artisan from Venice, Italy). He taught the Ugurlu’s the fine art of gelato, sorbet, and sherbet preparation using the company’s all natural ingredients. Mazzero explained that gelato has been consumed in Italy for more than 2000 years, starting with the Romans bringing snow from the mountains in terracotta vessels and mixing it with fruit and sugar. Even residents of Pompeii obtained snow from Mt. Vesuvius for that purpose—until the volcano buried the city. Please visit our other restaurant in Bellingham: The Harborside Bistro is in the elegant Bellwether Hotel on the bay downtown. |
